Celebrate the world of architecture
Our picks for the inaugural Festival of Architecture, 7–17 September
Design, Bitches
Architects Rebecca Rudolph and Catherine Johnson were once asked the question, “Architecture is…?” They responded with, “It’s design, bitches”. It stuck, becoming the name of their LA firm. Keynote speakers for the festival, the duo are known for their bold approach to redefining restaurant and eatery spaces (Little Octopus, Nashville, pictured above left). Registration required, 6.30pm, Mon 11 Sep, Mercury Theatre, 9 Mercury Lane
The Homesick Blues
There are few issues more important to Aucklanders in this year’s election than housing. If Auckland’s population doubles in the next 25 years, as expected, where will we all live? In this debate, Rod Oram will navigate the housing proposals of major party candidates including Phil Twyford, Alfred Ngaro, Julie Anne Genter, and more. 6pm, Wed 6 Sep, Owen Glenn Building, University of Auckland Business School, 12 Grafton Rd
Green Building Walking Tour
Wynyard Quarter has been hiding behind safety fences for so long it’s hard to remember what was once there, let alone consider what’s new. Here’s the perfect way to catch up: This tour will take in ‘green’ accredited buildings including Fonterra HQ, the Mason Bros and Lysaght buildings, Innovation 5A, and Sustainable Coastline’s Flagship Building. Registration required, 10am, Sat 9 Sep
Tāmaki Makaurau Hikoi
Tipped to be a fascinating take on Auckland, take a waterfront stroll with respected orator and actor Pita Turei, who will discuss ways heritage can be used to empower design outcomes that link this land to its people. Registration required, 12pm, Sat 16 Sep, starts at The Cloud, Queens Wharf
The Great Debate: Architects vs Engineers
Enjoy a good ol’ debate – Auckland engineers and architects face off over the proposition that ‘engineers can design better affordable housing than architects’. Head along a little bit earlier to enjoy some light refreshments before what’s sure to be an entertaining night. 6.30pm, Thu 14 Sep, University of Auckland Engineering Lecture Theatre, Building 401, 22 Symonds St
